Prerequisites
- The report uses many acronyms, and teachers may want to take time to go through the list on page 4. Additionally, teachers may want to project page 4 as students read so they can quickly reference it.
- Students should understand the causes, impacts, and some adaptation and mitigation strategies for climate change. Students should also be familiar with the organizations and agreements associated with international climate policy.
- The complete report only seems to be available in English, but the summary is available in English, German, Spanish, French, and Arabic.
Differentiation & Implementation
- Students can practice data analysis by first viewing the graphs and charts, discussing what they mean, and reading the written description.
- Classes with a limited amount of time to devote to this report can read the summary, do a jigsaw activity with either sections of the full report or sections of the summary, read and discuss just the key messages, or analyze the graphs, charts, and data.
- Attribution science is mentioned throughout the report. If students are unfamiliar with this term or need a refresher, the video Attribution Science: Linking Climate Change to Extreme Weather can be helpful.
- After reading about the Human Development Index in the full report, students can relate the concepts of education, a long and healthy life, and a decent standard of living to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Students can also relate these goals to the increased instances of gender inequalities and violence with the increase in climate impacts, as described in the report. If students are not reading the full report, teachers can read the description for students on page 25 of the report.
This resource uses an index to visualize the effects of climate-related extreme weather events. The report is well-sourced, with an extensive list of peer-reviewed articles cited. Through text and many clear figures, the risks of climate change are detailed, and the science of attributing extreme weather events to climate change is detailed. This resource is recommended for teaching.
