- This book does an excellent job of introducing vocabulary in the text.
- Students in foster care will feel represented by the characters of Imani and Amirah.
- The book ends with guidance to take slow breaths to calm down, which is helpful for all students, especially those with anxiety.
Prerequisites
- Some students may need the terms emergency, average, lightweight, and others defined before reading.
- Students may benefit from seeing the red vocabulary words in the story before reading.
Differentiation & Implementation
- Students can create infographics to inform others about the dangers of extreme heat and how to prepare.
- In math or science classes, older students can analyze temperature data to see the increasing incidences of extreme heat events. Teachers can explain how global climate change contributes to this increase.
- Students can brainstorm things they can do at home to prepare for extreme heat and create a short list of people to check in on during an extreme heat event.
This resource helps students understand and prepare for extreme heat. Key terms are clearly defined, and includes a list of preparations is included. The one fault of this resource is that it does not show the link between climate change and extreme heat, teachers could use it to start such a discussion. This resource is recommended for teaching.
