Synopsis
- In this lesson from the World's Largest Lesson, students will learn the importance of global cooperation in achieving the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
- Students will be given the task of completing a puzzle that is set up to require them to work together as a community.
- This task will connect this to the global goals and help students understand that, though some may not have a lot to contribute and others may have more than enough, we all need to work together.

- This activity is a great way to illustrate the importance of cooperation to achieve goals.
- By working with the hands-on, physical task of completing a puzzle, students will remain engaged and focused, making them more likely to understand the connection to global goals.
Prerequisites
- Teachers will need to prepare one puzzle for each student before doing the activity.
- The link in the introduction to the video introducing the global goals does not take the viewer to that video. Teachers can instead use this resource for students who need background information.
- The link to the petition in the What Can We Do Right Now section may not work.
Differentiation & Implementation
- Students can practice informative writing by creating how-to guides for achieving global goals.
- After completing the puzzles, students can take some time to discuss which of the goals fit in each of the themes. Students can select one theme to research further and create a presentation.
- Teachers can talk about climate change and how it can be connected to each of the themes represented in the puzzles.
- Teachers can address the connection between climate change and the economy, agriculture, food waste, environmental justice, public health, water pollution, and water scarcity. Teachers can also discuss education, clean energy, and gender equality as climate solutions.
- Alternatively, students who already have background knowledge about climate change can select one of the themes and explain how it is connected to climate change.
This lesson focuses on the idea that working together to achieve goals is more effective than working alone. This is contextualized with the UN's global goals, and the lesson discusses how if countries, governments, and other organizations work together, they can achieve more of the global goals than if they work alone. The global goals focus on creating a sustainable and equitable world where everyone's basic needs are met. Goals include climate action, peace, justice, and partnership, along with other environmental and human rights-related goals. The information presented is accurate, and this resource is recommended for teaching.
