What it is

  • Using this interactive graph, table, and map from Our World in Data, students can explore data for each country's emissions of nitrous oxide.
  • The data goes back as far as 1850 and can be isolated or downloaded as needed.

Teaching tips

Positives
  • If students hover over the term carbon dioxide-equivalents, there will be a useful pop-up to define the term.
  • Students can easily see who the largest emitters are worldwide.
Prerequisites
  • Students should understand that nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas and should be familiar with the greenhouse effect and climate change.
Differentiation & Implementation
  • To understand the comparative warming potential of nitrous oxide and some practices that result in high emissions, students can read The World's Forgotten Greenhouse Gas.
  • Students can compare this data with the Annual CO2 Emissions data.
  • After viewing the data and understanding the practices that emit nitrous oxide, students can brainstorm solutions for reducing emissions.

From the scientist review

This resource outlines the global N2O emissions aggregated from selected countries. Ideally, global warming potentials for N2O were calculated within a period of 100 years and taken into account to get the sum of CO2 equivalent expressed in tonnes. This resource is recommended for teaching.
