What it is
- This collection of kindergarten-readiness activities helps young children practice movement, balance, and breathing while learning to identify their name and where they live.
- Students explore their animal neighbors, learn about Earth's climate zones, practice spatial concepts, and build the idea that no matter where they live, everyone shares the same home on Earth.
Teaching tips
Broken Links:
- The first activity suggests using the Outdoor Family Fun with Plum app; however, the app seems to be disabled.
- Instead, you can use activities from the PBS Kids Plum Landing series.
Preparation:
- Print the Earth graphic, climate zone strips, and the fill-in worksheet ahead of time.
- Choose and mark a safe outdoor space (school garden, household backyard, local park or wildlife reserve) for students to look for their animal neighbors.
Related Resources:
- Use this activity to engage students in listening and recreating the sounds of nature near them.
- Use this activity guide to get ideas for winter-specific nature exploration activities.
From the scientist review
This collection of activities helps younger students think about location at different scales. They will explore the environment around their home, learn about Earth's different climates, and learn how to describe where they live, from their town name to the planet. These activities introduce the idea that places can have different climates and environments. The information presented is accurate, and this resource is recommended for teaching.
